Dune: Awakening – Vertical Challenges

Vertical challenges are open-world points of interest. My task was to develop a consistent and well-paced narrative-driven encounter prototype. This prototype involved finding locations in the world that supported interesting challenges for encounters and navigation, and should also fit into the region’s narrative. I developed two of these challenges. Each provides an appealing point of interest, navigation challenges, and combat. The player must be wary of danger or be ambushed while navigating.

Responsibilities:

  • Design the encounter type to be repeatable and recognizable by the player. It also needed to take advantage of the vertical elements of the region.
  • Gray level and encounter design and setup.
  • Coordinate with environment artists to finalize the locations.
  • I developed a second vertical challenge location and provided direction and feedback on others.
